The Pinocchio Park is located at Collodi, the small town where Carlo Lorenzini, who wrote Italy's best known children's story Le Avventure di Pinocchio, spent his childhood, later using the name of the town as his own pseudonym. Laid out between 1956 and 1987 as a theme park for children, it is quite different in concept from the traditional amusement park, in that it is designed to give young visitors the impression of being part of an animated fairy tale in a setting that blends art and nature. The local authorities had the original idea for the park in 1951, to mark the seventieth anniversary of the publication of the first episode of the Pinocchio story. A national competition was launched for the park and the sculptures it was to contain, and eighty-four sculptors took part. It was won jointly by Emilio Greco (for the "Pinocchio And The Fairy" sculpture), and Venturino Venturi for the Mosaic Plaza. The winning entry for the design of the park was by Renato Baldi and Lionello De Luigi. The Villaggio di Pinocchio eventually opened in 1956. Over the years, new features have been added to the park. In 1963 a restaurant called the "Osteria del Gambero Rosso", designed by architect Giovanni Michelucci, opened. 1972 saw the arrival of the Paese dei Balocchi (Toytown), designed by Pietro Porcinai and Marco Zanuso, together with twenty-one bronze sculptures by Pietro Consagra, representing the story's characters, events and settings. In 1986 the so-called "Words and Pictures Workshop" was added, based on a sketch by Giovanni Michelucci; here educational sessions and exhibitions of children's illustrations are held.
