E' uno stupendo esempio di architettura militare risalente alla prima metà del XVI secolo. Si tratta di una possente costruzione a pianta quadrata, circondata da un profondo fossato, con quattro grossi puntoni di forma triangolare, probabilmente realizzata su disegni di Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio. L'accesso al cortile interno avveniva attraverso un ponte levatoio adesso sostituito da uno in muratura. Verso i primi del '900 la Brunella venne acquistata e ristrutturata dalla famiglia inglese dei Waterfield che la trasformò in una residenza signorile. Nel 1977 fu acquisita dallo Stato Italiano che a sua volta l'affidò al Comune di Aulla destinandola a sede del Museo di Storia Naturale della Lunigiana. All'interno della Fortezza si apre un grazioso giardino pensile da cui si può ammirare uno splendido panorama dell'Appennino e delle Alpi Apuane.
This superb example of military architecture from the first half of the 16th century is an imposing square construction, surrounded by a deep ditch with four triangular supports, and was probably based on a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. Access to the inner courtyard was by drawbridge, which has now been replaced by a stone bridge. In the early 20th century the fortress was bought and renovated by a British family, the Waterfields, who turned it into a noble residence. In 1977 it became the property of the Italian state, which in turn put it in the hands of the town of Aulla, for use as the home of the Museum of Natural History in the Lunigiana area. Inside the fortress is a delightful hanging garden, which affords splendid views over the Apennines and the Apuan Alps.
